How the gematria calculator works
Gematria turns words into numbers. Each letter has a value, the values are added, and the total is the word's gematria value. This free gematria calculator applies eight English ciphers to whatever you type and shows every total together, so you can compare them at a glance. Click any result to see the letter-by-letter breakdown and a list of names and words that share the same value.
If you type a number instead of a word, the calculator lists the names and words in our dictionary whose value equals that number in the selected cipher. If you type Hebrew letters, it adds the traditional Hebrew value as well. For name numerology, check the Reduction and Chaldean rows, which are the tables behind most numerology name numbers.
What is in the results
- English Ordinal: A = 1 to Z = 26, the most widely used table.
- Reverse Ordinal: Z = 1 to A = 26.
- Reduction and Reverse Reduction: every letter becomes a digit from 1 to 9.
- Sumerian: ordinal values multiplied by six.
- Jewish English: units, tens and hundreds, in the pattern of Hebrew numerals.
- Francis Bacon: a 24-letter alphabet in which I = J and U = V.
- Chaldean: a numerology table used for name numbers.
Every table is shown in full on its cipher page, with a worked example and notes on where it came from, including which systems are traditional and which are modern conventions.

Frequently asked questions
What is a gematria calculator?
A gematria calculator converts the letters of a word, name or phrase into numbers using a chosen cipher, then adds them up. Ours shows the total in eight English gematria ciphers at once, and in Hebrew when you type Hebrew letters.
What is English gematria?
English gematria applies the idea of Hebrew gematria to the Latin alphabet. The most common version, English Ordinal, gives A = 1, B = 2 and so on to Z = 26. Other versions include Reverse Ordinal, Reduction, Sumerian and Jewish English.
Which gematria cipher should I use?
English Ordinal is the usual starting point. Use Reduction or Chaldean for name numerology, and Hebrew for Hebrew words. There is no single correct cipher, so use the one that matches the tradition you are following.
What is the difference between gematria and numerology?
Gematria links words that share the same total, while numerology reduces numbers to a single digit and assigns each a meaning. They overlap in name numbers, and this calculator shows both.
Is my text stored or sent anywhere?
No. The calculation runs in your browser, so what you type stays on your device.
Is gematria accurate or scientific?
Gematria is a method of interpretation, not a science. Many words share the same total by chance, so matches are interesting but are not evidence of prediction.
Can I calculate Hebrew gematria?
Yes. Type or paste Hebrew letters (for example חי) and a Hebrew row appears in the results, using the standard Mispar Hechrachi values.
Is the gematria calculator free?
Yes. All calculators and guides on this site are free to use, with no sign-up.
Gematria and numerology are traditions of interpretation, not sciences. Results are provided for education, curiosity and entertainment and are not a prediction or professional advice.
